By way of introducing myself I'd like to say I'm Tina Chapa and I love bikes. I was five years old when I learned to ride a bike up and down the streets of Wasco, California and I can say to the best of my memory I've always had time to ride my bike even if for just fifteen minutes in a week. Riding a bike gives me a sense of freedom that no other activity can. The freedom of riding up the mountain pushing and pulling on the pedals working to reach the top for my reward the downhill on the other side so much fun and so worth it. The bicycle is my fountain of youth a place where I can keep up and sometimes just sometimes still be a little faster than my children. It's happy time with my daughter Jenny, talking time with my daughter Alex, and racing time with my son Mikali. Yes, the bike as the title of one book says "The Noblest Invention," levels the playing field and everyone can have the feeling of going fast by the power in your own two legs as you push those pedals and turn those wheels and just let the wind blow past as you take your journey.

As a local product of Kern County I grew up riding bikes from the time I was in elementary school all the way through high school. After graduating from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo with a degree in urban planning I saw this job as an opportunity to combine two of my passions: planning and bicycling. I don't think there could be a better fit for me. I love this job because I love my community and through Bike Bakersfield I get the opportunity to promote bicycling as a viable source for everyday transportation which in turn will improve our community's air quality and health. It is my desire to help the citizens of Bakersfield understand the fiscal and health benefits of biking while working with local government agencies to create a better bicycle infrastructure.

For the last two decades, bicycles have been a large part of my personal and familial transportation solution. I have enjoyed the challenge of using bikes for transporting my kids around and across Bakersfield as they've outgrown the bike trailers, yet still require a parental taxi service. I find satisfaction from going to the grocery store and filling up a cart of groceries, then getting it all home by bike. And going to the pub with friends is so much more rewarding when I get them to go there with me by bike.
