MISSION
We promote bicycling for everyday
transportation in Bakersfield.
VISION
We are seeking to create a
culture in Bakersfield in which the bicycle serves as a popular
and preferred means of transportation.
Bakersfield can become the kind
of place where children ride bikes to school and to see friends,
parents ride to and from work, and the whole family enjoys bicycling
to soccer practice, to visit family, to the grocery store, or maybe
just for an ice cream cone!
OUR GUIDING PRINCIPLES
• Everyday bicycling
can be for everyone. It is not merely for recreation, for children,
and for those who cannot afford cars. Bakersfield’s generally
temperate climate and level topography, as well as a consistently
improving network of arterial bike lanes and paths, all help to
make Bakersfield an ideal city for cycling.
• Bicycling can be a safe
and enjoyable experience under the right conditions. Bicyclists
must not only be safe but through education gain the knowledge of
how to safely ride on the streets of Bakersfield.
• Education is a key component
to creating a cycling culture. Cycling education includes; safety,
legal, and practical issues pertaining to bicycling as a primary
means of transportation for both children and adults.
• A comprehensive marketing
campaign during Bakersfield Bike Month, in May, will accelerate
the change to a more vibrant bicycling culture in our community.
• Bicycling is a healthy,
environmentally friendly, economical, safe, and fun means of transportation.
It prevents traffic congestion and carbon emissions, improves health,
and saves money for those who choose to cycle; it also saves money
for society as a whole in roadway infrastructure, and health-care
related costs.
OUR HISTORY
Bike Bakersfield was up and riding on January of 06'. Since it's
formation the goal has been the same: get people on bikes, educate
cyclists, and create a bicycle culture in Bakersfield. We started
with the website and promotional literature
The
Bike Kitchen was formed when Joe O'Grady joined Bike Bakersfield
in May of of 06'. The
Bike Kitchen has since become one of Bakersfield's most valuable
cycling resources. |
